Debate over federal role in public school policy

The New York Times reports that leaders at the state and national level disagree over how Washington should hold states accountable for performance in public schools. While Congress considers rewriting No Child Left Behind, President George W. Bush’s education law, leaders are struggling to evaluate issues including the effectiveness of standardized tests, and the achievement gap between white children and poor and minority children.
