Empathy? There’s a test for that.

Should children be tested for their ability to show self-control, empathy and joy?

The New York Times reports that nine school districts in California have begun quietly evaluating students’ social and emotional behavior.

Angela Duckworth, the MacArthur Foundation fellow who has done extensive research on “grit” — a combination of passion and perseverance — thinks these tests are a terrible idea. To learn more, check out the online grit scale which appears in Duckworth’s forthcoming book.
