The AP reports that The Center for American Progress – a think tank which has proved to have an influence on White House policy in the past – is outlining a plan that would provide preschool for all three- and four-year-old children within the next five years. Under the plan, Washington would match states’ spending on preschool programs at an average rate of $10,000 per child. Members of the Obama administration have indicated that providing preschool for all would be a priority during his second term. Studies have shown that children who go without early childhood education are more likely than their counterparts to drop out of school, become a teenage parent and be arrested for a violent crime.
