A Community Education Council in Queens is opposing three new charter schools that are applying to open in District 24, the New York Daily News reports. The council — comprised of parents of children attending schools in Corona, Middle Village and Elmhurst — says the district is overcrowded and space in public school buildings is too limited to allow co-location with charter schools. Applications for the charter proposals are due to the Department of Education by March 15 and, if approved, the three new schools will open in 2014.
