Why Regular School Hours Clash With Teenage Biology

Teenagers are grouchy, inattentive, and all-around sleepy in the morning because bedtimes and waking times get later once they reach puberty. This is a fact researchers have known for years now, wrote Russell Foster, an expert in circadian neuroscience, in a recent Slate.com article. And yet most schools are still reluctant to start the learning day later to better accommodate their students’ biology.  Russell cited research to show those who have, have seen an improvement in their teens’ schoolwork.
