Political division as PEP shutters more schools

At last night’s Panel for Education Policy meeting and vote on 53 proposals – a mix of phase-outs, closings and co-locations at NYC Public Schools – division among the panel members was clear. Only once during the panel’s vote was there a consensus. Mayor Bloomberg’s seven appointees, along with the four members appointed by the borough presidents, raised their hands in favor of the proposed location for Eagle Academy for Young Men of Harlem. For the remaining proposals, the panel was divided. The evening began at 6 p.m., with hundreds of parents, students and teachers filling the seats in Brooklyn Technical High School’s auditorium. School-Stories.org reporters Joanna Seow, Nell Gluckman and Carey Reed covered the vote for Gothamschools.org. Find their live tweets of the event, here.
